How do you make Chipotle pulled pork taste good?
The Best Pulled Pork Chipotle powder, apple cider and ketchup create the perfect balance of smoky, sweet and tangy without the need for a smoker or grill! For our classic, satisfying pulled pork, all that’s required is a flavorful homemade rub and a long trip to the oven to cook low and slow until it’s meltingly tender.
Whisk together the chile powder, salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar in a small bowl until completely combined and no lumps remain. Spread the spice rub evenly over the pork butt, pressing it into the flesh on all sides. Let the pork sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour or wrap tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 48 hours. Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 275 degrees F. Whisk together the barbecue sauce, apple cider, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and the remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar in large Dutch oven or other heavy large pot until combined. Transfer the pork and any accumulated juices to the pot, turning the pork to coat it with sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat. Then cover, transfer to the oven and bake until the pork is very tender and easily shreds when pulled apart with a fork, 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Let the pork cool uncovered for 30 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of the sauce for serving, then smash the pork into the remaining sauce with a potato masher; it should fall apart and shred completely. Stir to combine the pork with the sauce. Serve on toasted potato rolls topped with coleslaw. Pass the reserved sauce.

Directions –
-
- Step 1 Make pork: Preheat oven to 300°. Trim excess fat from pork and cut into large pieces to fit in a large Dutch oven.
- Step 2 In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin, then season with black pepper. Rub all over pork. (This can be done the night before.)
- Step 3 In a large Dutch oven over medium high heat, heat oil. Working in batches, add pork and sear on all sides. (Spices can burn quickly so don’t let it go for too long!)

How long to cook pulled pork in slow cooker?
Everyone needs a good pulled-pork recipe, and this, my friends, is the BEST. Insanely tender and loaded with barbecue flavor, you’ll dream about it (sandwiched between a soft potato bun ) often. And that’s okay, considering how easy it is to make. What cut of pork should I buy? This recipe calls for boneless pork shoulder.
Though there’s not a lot of fat, it loses it toughness with the long cook time. You could also use pork butt, which has more marbled fat and will result in even more flavorful and tender meat. Why cook pulled pork in the oven and not the slow cooker? Our slow-cooker pulled pork is bomb, and we love that we can just dump everything—sauce ingredients and all—in at once.
But it also takes longer–at least 5 hours. And, more importantly, in a slow cooker, you miss out on burnt ends. What are burnt ends? They’re the blackened edges that are a result of the fat and sauce ingredients caramelizing. Do I need to sear the meat first? If you want burnt ends (and I know you do!), then yes.
- And if you’re using a Dutch oven, it’s a quick and easy step.
- That said, it’s not 100 percent necessary.
- Can I use store-bought sauce? Yep! Though you should know our recipe requires ingredients you likely have in your pantry already.
- If you’re missing a spice or two, don’t stress.
- Leave them out or improvise with your own favorite spices! Can I skip the beer? Short answer: Yes.
But you’ll need to sub in an equal amount of another liquid, like apple cider. But if you want to leave it out just because you don’t like it, reconsider! Beer pairs really nicely with pork, and in the oven, it takes on a caramelly, toasty flavor. It’s kind of like anchovies in caesar salad dressing, or espresso powder in brownies ; the play a small but important part.
What should I top my sandwiches with? We love some dill pickles and sliced raw or pickled red onion, Something bright and acidic to cut through the fatty pork! Fried onions, coleslaw, or potato chips are other great toppers. What else can I do besides sandwiches? The limit does not exist. Tacos with pineapple slaw, pulled-pork crescent rings, and BBQ shepherd’s pie are just a few of our amazing pulled-pork recipe ideas,
Have you made this recipe? If yes, YAY! Rate the recipe below, and let us know how you liked it! Editor’s Note: After reviewing comments about the BBQ sauce, we have since retested this recipe and have reduced the amount of apple cider vinegar. If you like a tangier sauce, you can add up to double the amount of vinegar.
